AMMAN — Jordan's Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Mahmoud Hmoud said on Tuesday the Israeli attack on Gaza and the resulting humanitarian crisis threaten to spill over to the region.

During a UN Security Council session on the deteriorating situation in Gaza, Hmoud called on the international community to pressure Israel to allow the delivery of relief aid to Gaza and alleviate the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the besieged strip, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported.

"It is time for the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities and uphold the principles mentioned in its charter," he said, urging the council to halt the war and aggression against Gaza.

The ambassador also called on the Security Council to respond to calls of Palestinians in Gaza and reaffirm principles of justice and humanity."I have never heard of an occupying state pretending to be the victim as Israel does.”

Palestinian Ambassador to the UN Riyad Mansour called on the Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities and follow suit of the UN General Assembly that adopted a Jordanian-drafte resolution to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.

He also underlined the need to put an end to the bloodshed and the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
